Pietrelcina is a small town of about 3,000 inhabitants, located approximately twelve kilometers from Benevento. Its name derives from Petra Pucina (meaning “small stone”), referring to its position perched on a rocky spur along a bend of a tributary of the Tammaro River. This contrasts with Petra Majuri (“larger stone”), situated on the opposite riverbank.
In 1138, the town was destroyed by Roger II of Sicily but was rebuilt around 1173. Pietrelcina is famous as the birthplace of Padre Pio, yet it also offers a rich journey through history, spirituality, and authentic traditions.
With its ancient churches, rural landscapes, and typical local flavors, Pietrelcina is an ideal destination for those seeking reflection, culture, and genuine beauty.
