Program description

Vitulano is a small town in the province of Benevento, dominated by mountains Camposauro and Pentime, characterized by twenty houses one more beautiful than the other. A place where to live the past with all the comforts of the present. Food and wine tours, made of experiences in small dairies, walks in the mountains in total relaxation and safety immersed in silence, surrounded by a fairytale setting. The hospitality of the inhabitants is what makes this place even more special: with them you will discover scents and flavors of other times.

Itinerary

Meeting with our nature tour guide at 9:30 AM in Vitulano, at the Church of the Holy Trinity, with delivery of the welcome gift (shopping bag, local area map, discount vouchers for participating shops, souvenir gadget).

We will spend the day discovering the production process of Vitulano pecorino cheese, observing the traditional making of ricotta and cheese using strictly natural rennet, following ancient methods. The milk arrives in Vitulano freshly milked, carrying the flavors and aromas of the wild herbs grazed freely by the sheep.

We then continue along the shepherds’ trail in the high mountains, reaching the sheepfold that houses about 400 Massese breed sheep. Here we take a short break to enjoy the “shepherd’s snack”, featuring local cheeses, cured meats, and wines.

Afterwards, along the “hermits’ trail”, we visit the famous ruins of the Abbey of Santa Maria in Gruptis, a long-standing symbol of a past rich in history and legend. This ancient Benedictine abbey, founded between 940 and 944 by Lombard prince Atenulf II, is located on a cliff known as “il Funno”, in a strategic spot at the intersection of two old mule tracks that connected the Telesina Valley with the Vitulano Valley.
