What to Do in Naples in One Day

Both chaotic and artistic, Naples is the largest city in southern Italy and offers plenty to see and do in a single day. From world-renowned monuments to archaeological treasures, from Italy’s best pizza to the vibrant street culture, Naples is anything but boring. One day might not seem enough, but it’s more than sufficient to fall under the city’s southern charm and enjoy its authentic atmosphere.

Although Italy has always been a top summer destination, Naples is also perfect for winter trips. The city enjoys a mild, temperate climate, making winters pleasant and enjoyable. If you want to enjoy the best time of year without massive tourist crowds, choose May or late September.

What to See in Naples in One Day
Italy’s third-largest city is also one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest in Europe.

Throughout the centuries—especially during the Renaissance and Enlightenment—Naples was a major cultural hub, and its rich architecture reflects that legacy. Often described as an open-air museum, Naples boasts countless historical monuments and archaeological sites, including the nearby ruins of Pompeii.

One-Day Itinerary in Naples
Follow this guide to make the most of your visit, even if you’re short on time. These are the top things to do and see in a day in Naples:

Start Your Day with a Coffee and a Sfogliatella
Before your Naples adventure begins, enjoy a cup of authentic Neapolitan espresso. Coffee is great all over Italy, but Naples is famous for the best. Then head to a local pastry shop and try a sfogliatella, a shell-shaped filled pastry typical of the region.

Stroll Through the Historic Center
Take a morning walk through the historic center to avoid the crowds. Staying in a hotel in the Spaccanapoli area— a narrow street that slices through the city’s heart—will place you close to everything. Along this path, you’ll find pastry shops, souvenir stores, historic buildings, and beautiful churches.

Visit the Duomo
Walk along Via Duomo to the Naples Cathedral, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. Originally built in Gothic style, it has since been rebuilt and restored in various architectural styles. It houses the blood of Naples’ patron saint, San Gennaro, preserved in a small vial. Twice a year, it famously liquefies in front of the crowd—a spectacle known as The Miracle of San Gennaro.

Discover the Hidden World of Underground Naples
Like many Italian cities, Naples is built atop an older underground world. Napoli Sotterranea (Underground Naples) reveals ruins originally built by the ancient Greeks and expanded by the Romans. From Roman forums to markets, centuries of civilization are preserved in silence below the bustling city. Expect a 90-minute tour full of wonder and mystery.

Stop at Sorbillo for Pizza
Pizza, perhaps the most famous Italian dish, originated in Naples. Taste the original version at one of the city’s many pizzerias. The most famous, Sorbillo, serves a variety of pizzas at very affordable prices. Be prepared for long lines on weekends, but once seated, your pizza arrives within minutes. Try the classic Margherita with basil, tomato, and mozzarella. For shorter wait times, try SoloPizza on Via Medina—still amazing!

Admire the Facade of the Church of Gesù Nuovo
Originally built as a noble palace in the 15th century (Palazzo Sanseverino), the Church of Gesù Nuovo was transformed into a church in the 16th century. Its facade, designed by Giuseppe Valeriano, is covered in pyramid-like shapes that create a unique and unforgettable visual effect—perfect for a photo opportunity.

Explore Ancient Art at the National Archaeological Museum
Among Naples’ many museums, the National Archaeological Museum stands out. It houses the world’s finest collection of ancient Greco-Roman art and artifacts, including frescoes and mosaics from Pompeii, Greek sculptures, and bronze pieces from Herculaneum. Don’t miss the “Secret Room”, showcasing ancient erotic objects.

Stroll Down Via Toledo and Visit Toledo Metro Station
Via Toledo is Naples’ most famous shopping street and a great place to soak in the city’s vibrant energy. Browse stores and don’t miss the Toledo Metro Station, which won the 2013 LEAF Award for Public Building of the Year. CNN also named it Europe’s most beautiful metro station—you’ll understand why when you see it.

Visit Galleria Umberto I and Piazza del Plebiscito
Via Toledo also leads to more gems. The Galleria Umberto I offers a high-end shopping experience inside a grand, cross-shaped structure with a glass dome—Naples’ answer to Milan’s famous gallery. Even if you’re not into shopping, walking through this space is a must.

End your walk at Piazza del Plebiscito, one of Naples’ most iconic open-air squares. Surrounded by Palazzo Salerno, the Royal Palace, and the Church of San Francesco di Paola, its impressive architecture makes for stunning photos.

Visit the Castles
Naples is home to several impressive castles—two are must-sees even if you only have a day:

  • Castel dell’Ovo, at the seafront’s end, is the city’s oldest castle (12th century).

  • Castel Nuovo, also known as Maschio Angioino, is a medieval-Renaissance fortress near the port, built in the 13th century.

Even if you skip the tours, a stroll along the waterfront—especially at sunset—is a beautiful way to end your day.

Spend the Evening at Piazza Bellini
Naples is known for its lively piazzas where locals and tourists mingle late into the night. Piazza Bellini is a great spot, thanks to its great bars, restaurants, and live music by street performers and conservatory students. It’s a hub of the local nightlife scene. Enjoy a drink in one of the cozy pubs and admire the surrounding palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries, like Palazzo Castriota Scanderberg.

Where to Stay in Naples
To make the most of your day in Naples, choose the right accommodation. On short trips, every minute counts—so location matters. If you have an early flight, stay near Naples International Airport. Otherwise, book a hotel in the city center, preferably near a key attraction. Naples has some truly amazing hotels, and the right one will enhance your experience.
