Benevento: Unique, Unforgettable, and Steeped in History
Benevento stands as a one-of-a-kind destination, unmatched in its historical significance. The symbol of the city is undoubtedly the Church of Santa Sofia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.
Heading toward the Caudina Valley, you’ll discover Sant’Agata de’ Goti, a village recognized as one of the most beautiful in Italy, awarded the prestigious Orange Flag by the Touring Club and named a European Wine City in 2019.
Continuing into the Irpinia region, you’ll be captivated by the majestic Abbey of Goleto, one of the most important monumental complexes in Southern Italy.
Next, we’ll visit the charming medieval village of Rocca San Felice, where you can relax in the main square under the shade of the splendid “Tree of Liberty,” planted by the French in 1799. Legend has it that this area is home to the Gates of Hell, a mystical site known as Mefite—named after the ancient goddess of waters, who was worshipped for her powers over fertility and agriculture.
The Mefite of Rocca San Felice is a small sulfuric lake, mentioned by Virgil in the seventh book of the Aeneid, which has been bubbling since time immemorial. Its powerful gas emissions are said to induce eternal sleep. This is a truly unique place where nature reigns supreme, offering unforgettable emotions and sensations unlike anywhere else.
