Unesco’s patromony: Via Appia

Meeting with our tour guide at 9:00 AM at the Info Point of Benevento, Piazza Cardinale Bartolomeo Pacca, and delivery of the “welcome gift” (shopping bag, local area map, discount voucher for affiliated shops, souvenir gadget).

The experience begins with a guided tour of the Roman Theatre, located outside the medieval city walls, adjacent to the ancient route of the Via Appia. We continue with a walk along the Leproso Bridge, a Roman bridge that crosses the Sabato River at the edge of Benevento’s historic center. This bridge was the entry point into the city for the section of the ancient Via Appia coming from Capua.

Just a few steps away is the Arch of Trajan, dedicated to Emperor Trajan to commemorate the opening of the Via Traiana, a shortcut variant of the Via Appia that reduced the journey between Rome and Brindisi.

Next is a visit to the Cloister of Santa Sofia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, together with the Church of Santa Sofia, both representing the richness of the medieval world in all its forms.

End of the tour. Upon request, it is possible to book a traditional lunch featuring the cuisine of the Sannio area or enjoy a tasting of sweets and confections from the famous Strega Alberti company. We also recommend visiting the Museum of the Sannio, which houses archaeological, historical, and artistic artifacts from the region, including items related to the Via Appia.
