Explore Piana Romana, a rural road that leads to wide stretches of farmland, where Padre Pio lived out his childhood and received the stigmata—a place deeply rooted in spirituality and simplicity.

Meeting with our tour guide at 10:00 AM at the Benevento Info Point, Piazza Cardinale Bartolomeo Pacca, where you will receive a “welcome gift” (shopping bag, local map, discount vouchers for partner shops, and souvenir gadgets).

After a short walk along the main street, you will admire the city’s symbolic monument: the imposing Arch of Trajan. Built between 114 and 117 AD, it was erected to celebrate Emperor Trajan on the occasion of the inauguration of the Via Traiana — a variant of the Via Appia that shortened the route between Benevento and Brindisi. Trajan is remembered as “Optimus,” an enlightened ruler whose reputation has remained intact to this day; Dante himself placed him in Paradise, a testament to his undisputed greatness.

We continue along the pedestrian Garibaldi street until we reach the Santa Sofia Monumental Complex, which includes the church — one of the most important examples of Langobard architecture preserved to this day — the bell tower facing the square, the former monastery with its picturesque cloister, and the central fountain. Since June 25, 2011, the Church of Santa Sofia, part of the serial UNESCO site “The Lombards in Italy: The Places of Power (568-774 AD),” has been listed as a World Heritage Site.

Next, visit the Rocca dei Rettori, also known as the Benevento Castle or Manfredi Castle. It was founded on the site of an earlier fortified Longobard palace built by Duke Arechi II starting in 871.

The experience begins in the early afternoon with a visit to the birthplace of Padre Pio, the house where Francesco was born — the paternal home of his uncle Grazio, located at number 27, Vico Storto Valle. The kitchen has a separate entrance directly onto the street. This space (number 28), along with the adjoining room that was initially used as the bedroom for the younger Forgione children and later converted into a dining room, was the center of young Francesco’s domestic life.

Next, admire the Tower and the Church of Sant’Anna. This little church, a jewel of simplicity and spirituality, is the authentic “treasure chest” of Padre Pio’s spiritual journey: birth, baptism, confirmation, Eucharistic life, ecstasies, and visions.

We continue with a visit to the Convent of the Capuchin Friars; attached to it is the evocative Padre Pio Memories Museum, dedicated to the saint and his legacy.
